Their love flourished, and Tan Bun An sought her hand in marriage. However, Siti Fatimah's father demanded an extravagant dowry of nine jars of gold from China. When the jars finally arrived, they were shockingly filled with pickles instead of gold. Embarrassed and furious, Tan Bun An hurled the jars into the river, only to discover that the gold was hidden beneath the pickles. In a desperate attempt to reclaim the dowry, he dove into the river but tragically drowned. Heartbroken, Siti Fatimah followed him into the water, and it is said that their spirits together created the enchanting Kemaro Island.


Historical and Cultural Sites Kemaro Island is home to several revered sites, the most notable being the Hok Tjing Rio temple. This historic temple, built over 500 years ago, honors the love between the prince and princess while celebrating Tan Bun An's Chinese heritage.
