Overview

Yungay is a charming town nestled in the department of Áncash, Peru, surrounded by the breathtaking Cordillera Blanca, home to Huascarán, the highest peak in the country. This small but vibrant community has a poignant yet inspiring history that shapes its identity today.
Historical Roots The roots of Yungay trace back to the colonial era, when Spanish settlers established the town in the 16th century. Over the centuries, Yungay thrived as a hub for agriculture and trade, thanks to its fertile valleys and strategic location. The Tragic Earthquake However, Yungay's fate took a devastating turn on May 31, 1970. A powerful earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale struck the region, triggering a massive avalanche from Huascarán's north face. A torrent of ice, snow, and rock surged down the mountain at speeds exceeding 200 miles per hour, engulfing the town in mere moments. Tragically, an estimated 20,000 lives were lost as Yungay was buried under meters of debris.


Resilience and Renewal In the wake of this catastrophe, the Peruvian government designated the site of the original town as a national cemetery, honoring those who perished. The survivors relocated to a safer area nearby, establishing what is now known as New Yungay. This new settlement not only preserved the name but also embodied the resilience of its people, who carried forward their traditions, memories, and communal spirit to rebuild their lives.


With international aid pouring in, the community worked tirelessly to reconstruct homes, schools, and hospitals. Despite the profound trauma, a shared determination emerged, allowing the residents to create a thriving community anew, rich in culture and hope.


A Place of Remembrance and Beauty Today, New Yungay serves as both a site of remembrance and a beacon of hope. Visitors often pay their respects at the old Yungay, known as Campo Santo, where the remnants of the tragedy linger. The cemetery, adorned with white crosses, marks the graves of those who lost their lives, reminding all who visit of the past.


At the same time, Yungay has embraced a vibrant new life. The town is renowned for its stunning landscapes, where lush greenery and vibrant flowers contrast beautifully with the snow-capped mountains. The local economy has diversified, focusing on agriculture, tourism, and small-scale industries, allowing the community to flourish.
